3/16/2002 - Welcome back to Robsta’s Gameroom! This place contains no computer, or X-BOX room. It is time once again to venture into the world of Playstation 2 and PS1 gamepad reviewing. This time I will be testing the RX400 Console Racing Wheel from Saitek. As you might have guessed by now, there might just be some fender-banging I mean paint-trading going on today. If you are a video racing freak like I am, than you want to feel like you are really driving your car or truck. There is no better way than to play with a controller that is actually a steering wheel that is linked to a gas and brake pedal assembly. I just heard those famous four words in racing, so that means that it is time for me to sit down, buckle up, put on my helmet, and start burnin' some rubber.

Robsta Raves About the RX

First Impression |
I must say that I was very excited to start gaming when the RX400 box was opened. Like a lot of us here at joystickreview - Robsta is also a BIG racing fan. I learned about a few words like patience and anticipation being at work all day knowing that there was this AWESOME looking steering wheel with a gas and brake pedal setup at home waiting to be put through lap after lap of nothing but pure chewing satisfaction!!! Robsta will wave the GREEN FLAG at 9 points for the RX400 sending it to the first turn with nothing but clear track ahead. |

Game(s) Included |
The RX400 does not come with a game, therefore 5 points is the maximum available for this category. There is no game with the RX400, so 5 points will be added to the score. |

Looks |
The members of Saitek have assembled a groovalicious work of art. The RX400 just looks like you can do 200 + mph with ease. The three spoke racing wheel with the Formula-1 style gearshift levers behind the blue analog/digital control buttons is very easy one the true video race car drivers eyes. I remember one evening over at Spy's house, we rented all racing games, and proceeded to dawn the FULL-FACE RACING HELMETS with COMPLETE MULTI PERSON COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS. I figured that would probably be as close as I would ever get to hear someone say "YOU NEED TIRES." To make a long story short, I wish I had an RX400 when I looked out of my face shield that night, but times have changed and the future is definitely looking brighter… if you catch what Robsta is sayin'. The one thing I do see is 9 points adding to the score as the RX400 slides out to the wall and takes the lead going down the backstretch. |

Comfort |
I knew going into this particular category that scoring this would be very difficult; to give a fair amount I would have a tough time scoring a controller that is as versatile as the RX400. The wheel assembly comes with a slide-on adapter so you can just rest it on your lap and beat up the pavement, or you can loosen up the clamp, pull out the adapter, and clamp it onto a tabletop and pound out some laps. I found both ways to be comfortable after I taught myself to RELAX as much as possible on long straight-aways and or backstretches. I tried many different types of chair and lap/table mount combinations, and was able to adjust to almost every possible combo that I could think of. I am sure that with a little practice YOU TOO will be able to conquer the tracks like the Big Boys! Robsta feels 8 more points racking up as the RX400 continues its lead lap after lap. |

Construction |
The RX400 Console Racing Wheel from Saitek was definitely devised with the video race fan in mind. With a three-spoke wheel that offers smooth steering, while letting you know immediately with its cool rumble effect if you have made contact with someone or something. This BABY has two F-1 style shifters, six buttons, and a D-Pad that are all easy to reach with hardly any effort at all - even after a you sweat out a 125 mile qualifier at Daytona like I did. Robsta hears over the headset that the RX400 has just received 13 more points as the crossed flags fall, meaning that this review is halfway over. |

Playability |
I was very curious to see if the RX400 was better than my last experience with a racing wheel controller. That unit was turned in for TIGER WOODS 2001 which was better for me in the long run anyway… but enough of my sad stories.
My first video session was spent finding a good way to setup the RX400 in a manner that would suit my driving style as well as what was the most comfortable position to use this wheel considering that my feet would actually have to be pushing down on the gas pedal instead of kicking other people/drivers out of the way.
The second session was much more productive from a gamers point of view. At first I tried a few PS1 games, and only found a couple that were compatible for this controller, but that was not to discouraging because the ones that weren't were meant to be played with old school/loser/chalkboard controllers. Then I was done messing around, and dropped NASCAR HEAT '02 into the tray and pushed that brilliant purple button to watch the disc disappear into the PS2 game console. I had recently been stuck on a middle stage in the BEAT THE HEAT section. This would be a GREAT place for me to start. When the green flag dropped I found myself sliding to the outside wall as usual only this time I had a wheel in my hands, and I only bumped it slightly not even losing any speed as I headed for the outside groove on the track going into turn one. I was passed the first three drivers before I knew it, and was sitting in seventh place which had been my best finish with the other controllers in the gameroom up to this point. I finally got around Tony Stewart, and then the two yellow cars…" I passed them so fast, I never caught who they were." At this time I was able to see the two cars that had only been shadows because they were so far ahead of me. The laps were winding down, and the only two cars left to pass were THE INTIMIDATOR and THE KING! I knew that this would not be a good time for the phone to ring, or someone to knock on the front door or anything else to knock my concentration for a video loop. The only thing to do was to RELAX and take the bull by the horns. And that is exactly what Robsta did. I drafted the 3 car down the backstretch, passed him in the exit of turn 4, then came up on the back of the 43 car. Since the move worked so well on the previous lap, I decided to try it as I flew by the white flag knowing that I only had one shot to pull it off. It was a bold move, but any true racer would take the gamble like I did. Lucky for me I had the RX400 on my side, and the 43 car became another last lap victim. I never would have thought that when I started that race I would have finished in first place! I continued to burn up the track by passing the next seven stages with relative ease, and getting a streak of five silver cups in a row.
After all of that it was time for me to take a pit stop of my own, so I could get in a little GRAN TOURISMO 3 before my video gaming was done for the day. Upon entering the simulation mode, I went to check out the current status of my driving license tests. I found that there were tests that weren't complete, and decided that NOW was the time to see what I could do with the RX400. Of course that was no surprise… I was able to pass tests that were not so easy with conventional controllers. This is a FANTABULOUS thing because not only are you able to drive the tracks better, you have a more realistic feel for the game which is part of the ultimate video game goal. Once you find a setup that best fits your driving style, the RX400 will definitely take your game to that next level so you can race on other modes than easy or rookie. Unless you can't keep up with a MADMAN behind the wheel like myself, then you had better stick to some other game that doesn't test your nerves of steel or your split-second timing like a board game or something more their speed!
As the laps are winding down, Robsta notices 14 points that are splattered on the windshield while the RX400 is looking for caution flag because we are almost out of fuel!

Value (price for what you get) |
When I first heard how much it would take to get the RX400 to be a permanent fixture in the gameroom, I was very STOKED because I knew that between the change under the seat cushions, and the pop cans in the garage I would be able to buy the accessory that every video racer needs to own. For about 40 bucks (which is cheaper than some games) you will be able to put any car or truck into places that you only dreamed of - once you take the RX400 into your hands and feet. Robsta shells out 14.5 points as the RX400 passes the white flag on the way to the final lap. |

Recommend to Others |
I have already started spreading the word about the RX400. Once my lap times started to become lap records, I was very excited, and started letting my video friends know right away. Not that I was bragging or anything… well maybe just a little! I think that anyone who is a video race fan would enjoy their game time much more having a steering wheel with a gas and brake pedal assembly to make their racing experience more like the real thing. Robsta flies down the front stretch with the RX400 picking up 14 more points, and taking the checkered flag for its final test at joystickreview.
Robsta will climb out of the chair in victory lane and finish the season with 86.5 points. Somehow when the review was finished, I thought that RX400 should have finished with a higher total score. Well the one thing that I can do is tell everyone to go out and buy yourself an RX400 from Saitek!!! You will be elated with your new purchase of an OUTSTANDING console racing wheel. |

RECOMMENDATIONS to the Vendor
ROBSTA Upon further review, I found that I was able to adapt rather easily, and instantly improving my driving with the RX400 right out of the box. Any recommendations to the creators would be to benefit my own personal needs. The bottom of the laptop insert needs to have some material so it won't slip on any clothing once you start turning into a corner. Wider foot pedals would be nice so anyone that comes into the gameroom to play videos can keep their shoes on!!! Thanks to Saitek I am finishing much better in the higher racing modes.
