LAZ 11/10/2000  - Another versatile gamepad hits the market, and this one is definitely a contender! I reviewed this controller with the following games: JetFighter IV, Motocross Madness 2, and Sprint Cars.

LAZ Review Breakdown 83.6
First Impression It simply amazes me, that for just a little bit more money than the cheapest gamepads on the market you can get this gamepad - a higher quality and more versatile solution. 9.0
Software Installation I had no problems with the installation, and everything went on like the paper manual indicated. 8.5
Software Controller Interface Saitek's latest controller interface is very good, and easy to use. It is very robust, and allows you to easily configure any of the buttons to do the key (or key combination) that you will need. It contains a handy test screen that allows you to easily see that each of the buttons and controls function properly, as well as a tester for the force feedback options. Their New Game wizard allows you to easily browse through your files and associate a profile for each game, and the Import wizard allows you to easily get an existing file from a file or Saitek's web site. Their interface is simply one of the best I have seen and used. 9.5
Game Included None. 5.0
Help Instructions The paper manual was written well and was easy to follow. Generally you can find electronic help somewhere in the software's installation, but I couldn't find any help files. A robust interface deserves a robust help solution. The interface is very intuitive, but when you make software that is this easy to use, it becomes easier to overlook creating basic help - for the novice user that just doesn't get it. 6.0
Comfort All of the button's options were very easy to locate and use. The compact design places all of your options in just the right locations. For button location, this gamepad is simply one of the best. I expected from the looks that the comfort would blow me away, and it didn't. It wasn't uncomfortable or anything - I just expected from the looks that the comfort would blow me away. I handled this controller for an extensive amount of time to try to find out what I would do to try to improve the comfort - and I think maybe somekind of foamy/cushioning padding on the handles might do the trick - but there is no way I would suggest a redesign from the current compact design. The controls work great just like they are and the button positioning alone warrants a good comfort score. 8.5
Construction (Quality) Upon the first good look, I could easily tell that the quality on this controller was very good. There are many highlights to this controller: the analog stick operates very comfortably; the grooves in the digital pad made it easy to know where you were going at all times; the analog 'lock-out' feature is excellent (much better than a software solution, because you can easily change it on the fly); the rumbling force features worked very good - and they don't require batteries! I really like having the rumbling feedback in a gamepad, and once you get it you don't want to go back. 9.0
Looks I really like this design. It kind of has a tough/manly look - almost more like a tool. 9.0
Value (price for what you get) This controller offers an amazing number of software and hardware configuration options. With a price tag below $30, it is one of the best values in the market. 9.6
Recommend to Others Without hesitation. If all of the controllers in this category were lined up and the consumer could see and handle them, this would definately be one of the controllers that would make their final cut. 9.5

RECOMMENDATIONS to the Vendor

LAZ

  • I would like to see another analog stick on the right side (I noticed there is already room for it).
  • The tilt/lean technology would make this solution the best of all of the controller options.
  • Integrated help in the Saitek Gaming Extensions screen that contains the controller's picture.
