1/6/2002 - Holy Cow! This game is the coolest. I have never seen anything like it. Finely us girls don’t have to feel left out. There is a chick surfer, and the guy surfers are freakin hot. This game is like "Tony Hawk Meet’s Water".

1/26/2002 - Surfing? Well, I have always wondered what it would be like. I can't swim for crap, so I'm not likely to be trying this sport in real life any time soon. My big question here was, how good are they going to be able to simulate water? The answer is simple and direct, mind boggling! Read on for the details.

Configurable Options |
SKEETER |
Do you know what is so cool about this game? When you pick your surfer you have the option to look at their bio and it shows a little movie about the surfer your thinking about picking… cool Huh? There are thirteen different surfers that you can choose from; nine different levels; four different sizes of boards; and two different outfits your surfer wears. The Surfers you choose from are actual professional surfers.
Surfer Bios
The following surfer bios are a combination of what the game makers said, and my interpretation.
-
Rochelle Ballard is crazy. She charges harder than most of the guys and can lay it on the rail with the best of them. Rochelle is a barrel rider (riding inside the wave.)
-
Shawn Barron also known as ‘Barney’ is a total air freak. Always finding ways to shock people. Barney mixes skate style ollies and grabs with rolls and spins (in the air) to freak everybody out!
-
Taj Burrow is one of the best aerialists in the world. Taj is an Australian tornado of speed, and he’s hot!
-
Jason Collins also known as the ‘Ratboy’ cannot be touched in the air. He is always launching and always landing. He should be called the ‘Catboy’ because he always lands on his feet. Throw in some skate tricks, and you have the complete aerialist.
-
Tim Curran has carved out a big chunk of surf stardom by blasting his alley-oop on daily occasions. Tim’s flow and speed will tear you head off, so if you see him coming down the line -duck!
-
Shane Dorian is the most calm, cool, and collected surfer of the World Tour. If you watch Shane surf, you will be mesmerized by his smooth, effortless approach, then he’ll mess you up with a lip slide or massive air!
-
Christian Fletcher wasn’t the first person to do an air on a surfboard, but he is the first man to consistently bust huge airs on every wave he takes. Christan is the O.G. heavy metal air blaster.
-
Andy Irons is a definite threat to the world championship title. He’s a leader of the new school, fusing big balls of steel and an almost endless list of tricks. Andy isn’t a surfer to mess with in any condition.
-
Taylor Knox is every pro’s favorite pro. He has a flawless style and more power than most. Taylor’s mix of skill and raw power give him the edge on just about everyone. Taylor is the man.
-
Cory Lopez - if speed could kill, Cory would already be dead. His lightning quick snaps and slides combined with more than enough air ability make Cory one of the world’s best surfers from one foot waves to twelve foot waves.
-
Dan Mallloy is the youngest of the Malloy clan and has learned from some of the best on how to destroy any waves that cross his path. Dan rides the tube with ease and can throw as much heat as anyone in the lineup.
-
Fred Patacchia is quickly finding a niche in the highly competitive world of surfing. Fred has grown from a promising amateur to a rising pro.
-
Chris Ward is a style monster who has shown the world that he can easily blend perfect form with crazy aerials and gouging hacks that will rival anyone. Chris Ward is one of the world’s best free surfers, hands down.

Graphics |
SKEETER |
Man, the water really looks like water. When your surfing it shows the surf board cutting through the water. This game even has sharks, yeah I said sharks. It also has Dolphins, seals, birds, other surfers, swimmers, photographers, people in boats fishing, jet skis, buoys, jellyfish, and a whole lot more.
This game is the real thing. I just can’t get over how real the water looks.

Water, water, water. The way the waves crash, the wake coming from the back of the board, and the bubbles and underwater action when you are thrown from your board and are beneath the waves - simply outstanding. The people and other objects found in the game look as good as I have seen on any quality games lately, but the star of this game is game makers implementation of water graphics. |

Sound |
SKEETER |
Cow-a-bunga Dude! Surfs up! That is how they talk. When the chicks on the jet ski come pick you up after a wipe out, well if you’re a guy surfer they’ll hit on you, but if you’re the chick surfer they’ll say you go girl. The sound effects are great. The sound of the wave when you’re surfing on it was awesome. You can select from several music tracks to listen to during game play. |

In addition to all of the other sounds that Skeeter mentions, my main comment for this category is how well the water sounds synchronize with the graphics. If you have ever played around in the ocean, you only need to close your eyes while the game is going to recognize the real life sounds. |

Free Surf
You start out with three levels, but if you have unlocked new levels in Pro Tour (by getting your goals completed) you get to play them in Free Surf. You can see the points for each trick you perform on the current wave as you go.
Pro Tour
When you start a Pro Tour you are challenged to complete challenges. During the surf you need to be involved in the photo shoots for each level (get your picture taken during the surf.) Surfers will need to complete a list of goals. For each goal that is completed, the surfer gets points. In order to travel to a different location you must have a certain amount of points completed. Watch out though, cuz you can get attacked by a shark when your out there. When it bites you, it shows the fight under water. It is really funny to watch yourself get attacked. And the controller vibrates vigorously when your getting attacked or you wipe out.
Competition Mode
In competition mode you compete against other surfers in three minute heats. The top two point scorers in each heat get to advance to the next round. The second round goes at it for three minutes and the top scorers get to go to the final round where the winner has a chance to win a bigger surf board.

Beginner
I didn't really see any 'hand holding' or training wheels in this game, so in order for you to see the big waves you will either have to put in your training time or find some cheats. That being said, I pulled the game out of the package, plugged it in, and started surfing. I played several times and for several hours before I ever picked up the manual, and had a blast doing it.
Advanced
There is plenty of advanced action, and many moves that will require much dedication to the game to perform. This will require a combination of reading the manual, and practice - practice - practice.
Learning how to get your speed, time your jumps, and surf the pipes are some of the keys to being able to pull off moves that will help you score the big points.

Multi-player |
SKEETER |
You can play King of the Wave (one to four players), the person who stays on the wave the longest wins. You all surf on the same wave. You can Free Surf and do your own thing. On Free Surf if you play 1 player you’ll play with a full screen, if you play with two players, the screen makes two boxes. If you play with three players, the screen makes three boxes, and if you play with four players, the screen makes four boxes. You can compete for the most points by doing as many tricks as possible it the given time. |

This games implementation of multi-player is outstanding. You have several options to help you view the game the way you want. Most games will only give you the split screen options, but the 'King of Wave' option allows all four players to be on one big screen at the same time - so you can easily see what you and the others are doing. I loved this additional multi-player feature. |

When looking at my gaming budget, this would have been a game that would have been down my list (because the topic is not familiar)… and that would have been a huge mistake. Had I not experienced this game, I would have missed one of the funner gaming experiences I have had. We get a lot of products sent to the JR gameroom, and it is often hard to get the time to re-visit games - but this is a game I still constantly try to play… it is that fun.
If you have seen and/or played one of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series games AND liked it… I can't imagine you not liking this game.
With all of that said, this is likely a game of preference that you will either play and like a lot, or not.
