It is hard to believe it's been over 40 years! I started as a kid back in the late 60's helping my dad "Mel Lulay Homes" build houses, picking up boards and cleaning! I wanted to learn, and that I did. My younger two brothers helped, and before you know it I was leading them. My dad taught me all phases of home building: from designing, to using saws and nail guns. By 12 years old I was designing and drawing plans for our houses, even for other builders! In those days, we did nearly all phases of the work! With my brothers' help, dad's leadership and my mother's touch with the home buyer! Eventually business really took off, and with good subs (many 2nd generation I use today) we built them... sometimes in as little as 30 days!
Many times we would move into one of the houses for the family, as my folks would say - "all is for sale!" At one point, we moved 7 times in one year! Eventually we incorporated as Lulay and Sons Homes.
While I was in High School, I began helping teach high school drafting and building classes. I had an opportunity for an Architectural Scholarship, but elected to continue working in the family business, which were some good times in the late 70's... where it seemed we could do know wrong! Then the economy crashed in 1980, and everything stopped! I kept the license and formed Don Lulay Homes - building and drawing... anything to survive! The whole time I was enjoying and driving flashy cars, so I started selling the cars I drove. I was approached by my banker, who suggested that maybe I should open my own car lot! I did and worked 24/7 to build custom homes and run the car lot. Eventually things really took off again by the mid 80's!
As of today I've built hundreds of homes and sold thousands of cars! I still operate my dealership on Mission Street in Salem! As for Don Lulay Homes, the help of a great team, including my wife Teresa's ideas/support, stepson's management, Coldwell Bankers' marketing, and all the same subs for most of the last several hundred homes, we give the "Best Affordable Custom Home you see today".
